Now, if you have never seen anything from Sideshow and Hot Toys you should know one thing, these figures are simply amazing. The level of detail that you see is almost on an unparalleled level. Finally, I let her out. - Henny Yongman Why did I start this review out with one liner or three from the late, great, Henny Youngman? Because that’s pretty much the sum total of the script for Marvel’s “the Avengers”. Everyone else is praising Joss Whedon for the script but to me it was one joke after another after another with a little substance sprinkled in here and there to fill in the gaps between said jokes. Review: Captain America and Red Skull The first action figure review from this year’s Captain America: The First Avenger toy offerings ventures into uncharted territory for us at HeroesArentBorn.com with a look at the film’s Minimate line. For those unfamiliar with this product type, here is some brief background information. Originally created by Art Asylum in 2002 and featuring characters from cult licenses such as Dark Angel and Star Trek, Minimates were a modern American take on the block-style figures originating with LEGO in the 1970s. Minimates, however, were slightly larger in scale and highly detailed, giving them more in common with Medicom Toys’ popular Kubricks. Minimates gained greater prominence in the adult collector community when Art Asylum partnered with Diamond Select Toys to release dozens of two-packs featuring characters culled from all corners of the Marvel Universe. Nearly a decade later, Minimates have become a regular fixture in comic shops and Toys R Us locations across the nation. HAB: With regards to the new "Avengers Assemble" logo as well as the new name for your IRON MAN figure line ("The Armored Avenger"), is this an attempt to get the action figure lines to mirror the movies: as one combined universe, and are you planning to combine all three lines into a single AVENGERS line for 2012? HASBRO: Each line is definitely their own brand. However, we're excited about their convergence into one line in 2012. Stay tuned to Comicon for more Avengers news! HAB: Now that the line has been refreshed as "Iron Man: The Armored Avenger", can we expect to see a more diverse assortment of figures rather than variations on the Iron Man armor? Agent Coulson, Pepper Potts, or Obadiah Stane perhaps? HASBRO: These characters are not planned in our line. HAB: Several of the initial release THOR figures have an incredibly high degree of articulation--most notably ball-hinged hips. Is this something you plan to continue with future THOR figures and perhaps more frequently in other licenses such as STAR WARS? HAB: One thing that seems to be lacking in the Iron Man line is a play set for the 3 3/4 line. When we were in New York this past February, the G.I. JOE THE RISE OF COBRA: PIT MOBILE HEADQUARTERS was a huge hit with Joe fans and collectors. Any chance we could see something smaller in scale to the Pit for Iron Man? We know you had the Target release Hall of Armor Collection but what about a Hall of Armor play set with lights and sound? Some of the Micro Play sets are great but we need some for the 3 3/4" line!! HASBRO: We have a vehicle hitting shelves now that is smaller than the PIT, but has great 3 3/4" play features. Check it out! HAB: Will we see a Mandarin figure in the Iron Man Comic based collection and if you are working on one can we see? Pretty Pretty Please? We can even toss in a cherry on top. For some consumers, this is misleading because the URL gives the
impression that the cards are part of an interactive website. Can
you explain the purpose for this?
HAB: Aside from the upcoming Whiplash figure, can we expect to see any other non-armored or partially-armored figures in the Iron Man 2 figure line? Some good examples would be Iron Man and War Machine with flip-up faceplates, Rhodey, and Pepper Potts. HASBRO: There are more figures planned for a Fall release. Most of these will premiere at the San Diego Comic Con - we hope to see you there! HAB: Like the Galactic Heroes line, the "Iron Man 2 Super Squad" seems to be very successful with kids and collectors alike. Because of this great response, are you planning to continue these for Iron Man into 2011--even though it's a non-movie year? HASBRO: Keep your eyes peeled! Review: War Machine (Iron Man 2)
Part of the Iron Man mythos since the dawn of the 1980s, War Machine was the alter ego of Lt. Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes—Stark’s closest friend and the first person to set eyes on Iron Man outside of Wong-Chu’s camp (in the comic universe). Since the convoluted series of events leading to War Machine’s illustrated origins are not translatable to a two hour movie, the movie version strips away the extraneous circumstances and focuses on the widening rift between Stark, who wants to keep the Iron Man technology out of government hands, and Rhodes, the man who has to choose between loyalty to his friend and duty to his country. After witnessing a reckless alcohol-fueled display by a full-suited Stark, Rhodes absconds with the Mark 2 armor and delivers it to his superiors, allowing Justin Hammer and the U.S. military to transform the suit into their own version of Iron Man—War Machine. On the heels of Iron Man 2’s blockbuster opening weekend, HeroesArentBorn.com is pleased to present this integral character as our third Hasbro action figure review. Enjoy!
